    October 11, 20265 min read

    Before the conversation

    Conversation starters

    • "What would make life easier for you right now?"
    • "If something happened at night, how would you get help?"
    • "I worry when I can't reach you. Can we look at options together?"

    What to avoid

    • Ultimatums or surprise announcements
    • Talking about your loved one as if they aren't there
    • Arguing about every detail in one sitting

    When they say no

    • Acknowledge feelings: "I know this home means everything to you."
    • Offer choices: tour without commitment, try a respite stay.
    • Ask a trusted doctor, pastor or friend to join.
    • Consider in-home help as a first step — see respite care options.

    If safety is at risk

When there is immediate danger, use our Crisis Intake form or call (513) 226-9052.

    Frequently asked questions

What if my loved one refuses to move?
Adults with capacity have the right to decide. Focus on safety supports at home, revisit the conversation later, and involve their doctor. Guardianship is a last resort.
    Should we involve the doctor?
Yes. A doctor's recommendation often carries more weight and can provide an objective assessment of care needs.
How do we handle siblings who disagree?
Hold a family meeting with clear facts, or bring in a neutral geriatric care manager or mediator.
